Electromyography (EMG)

Electromyography or an EMG is performed by doctors who specialise in Clinical Neurophysiology, like the team at Sandton Sleep and EEG Lab. Electromyography determines the functioning of the skeletal muscle. This test is used to diagnose neurological conditions which typically affect the muscles, including plexopathy, motor neurone disease, or radiculopathy.

The actual test involves the nerve’s stimulation of the muscle to detect neuromuscular abnormalities. Electrodes are inserted through the skin into the muscle, and its electrical activity is displayed on a monitor that displays electrical waves (also known as an oscilloscope).
